Boring Businesses that Pay Big

by Alex Christian on February 6, 2010

Sometimes, all it takes it a good kick in the pants to get us motivated.  For those who suffered job loss in the recession, some took it as a sign to move on to new opportunities.  Some people harbor that secret desire to start their own home business but never had the time to do so.  What better opportunity to make money for yourself in a recession when no one is hiring?  What they say is true that you have to make your own luck so why not take matters in your own hands and start your own business?

Some people say it is insanity to start a business in a recession and there’s comfort of having a regular job with a steady paycheck.  Obviously, those days of being a twenty plus year employee with pension and benefits are a thing of the past.  Is there seriously something as job security anymore?  If there is one thing that the recession should have taught us is to save our money and be responsible for ourselves because there is no safety net.

Having said that, the home business of your choosing needs to be affordable and within your means.  Obviously it will be very hard to find funding whether it be a loan from a financial institution, family or friends.  So you will need to dig into your own reserves to finance your project yourself and hopefully make the money back and generate living expenses pretty quickly.  It might seem impossible to find such a business but it all depends on where you are looking.

It is not glamorous but the housekeeping business is worth looking into.  It is a cheap solo business you can get into because of the low overhead cost of cleaning supplies.  Judging by all the classifieds as I see people offering jobs house cleaning, this is a market to tap into.  The reason why this is a business that works is because while other people are scrambling to work their second and third jobs to make ends meet, they are neglecting their household duties because it is boring and not fun.

So the key to starting a business is to find boring business from both the stand point of the entrepreneur and the client.  The less competition you from other businesses, the more you can grow your monopoly.  The less desire the clients have to do it for themselves, the higher the likelihood of repeating customers.  It’s a win-win situation for you.  Have you found your boring but profitable business yet?
